Jason Mitchell
Intern Class of 2011
Recently, CIS caught up with Jason Mitchell, one of our summer interns back in 2011. He reminisced about his internship experience and updated us on what he's up to now.

Briefly describe what your research project involved.

I spent my summer in the Insight Lab for Science Outreach and Learning Research. My research project involved using Google Earth to create a program that would display the sun, viewed by several different infrared imagers, in 3D. This program was called the Digital Solar Explorer. To learn more, you can view my final presentation about the project here.

What was your favorite experience during the internship?

My favorite expierence during the internship was anytime I got to hang out with the other interns. I especially enjoyed the cook outs on Fridays, and the field trips.

How did the internship influence or change you?

The internship helped me choose what I wanted to do with the next stage in my life. It also taught me to be more independent by introducing me to working on a task with nobody telling you how to do it.

What are you up to now?

Right now I'm a student at RIT in the Imaging Science program. I and the rest of the freshman class is working to research, design, and build a multi-camera array for the TSA (Transportation Security Administration).

Would you recommend this experience to others?

I would recomend this to anyone who is unsure of what they want to study in the science field, since it really helped me.

Prior to being an intern, Jason participated in two NOVA Academy programs offered through RIT's K-12 Office. The NOVA Academy is a series of Saturday sessions held during the school year on the RIT campus which include hands-on, project-based workshops in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). Jason chose to participate in Imaging Science sessions during both of his experiences. Jason went on to graduate from Rush Henrietta Senior High in 2012, after which he enrolled in Imaging Science at RIT.
