Joseph P. Hornak, Ph.D.
Dr. Hornak is Professor of Chemistry and Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he teaches magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), analytical chemistry, and imaging science. He is also Director of the Magnetic Resonance Laboratory, a research and development laboratory on the RIT campus. His research interests include low-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance, multi-spectral tissue classification with magnetic resonance images, near-surface MRI in geophysics, magnetic resonance hardware development, MRI quality control, and MRI of materials. His current research focuses on the development of low-frequency EPR spectroscopy for studying objects with cultural heritage significance, specifically paintings and ceramics. His laboratory developed the EPR mobile universal surface explorer (MOUSE) that makes the EPR spectrometer more portable for cultural heritage studies.
Dr. Hornak received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and has done postdoctoral work at Cornell University. He is author of more than 200 published papers and conference presentations on magnetic resonance related topics. He is editor of Wiley's Encyclopedia of Imaging Science, and author of the popular The Basics of MRI and The Basics of NMR, the first open access, web based, hypertext books on MRI and NMR.
