Below is a compilation of physics & astronomy opportunities in Rochester, NY and Monroe County. This includes local astronomy clubs, middle and high school summer classes, high school summer internships, observatory open houses and observing opportunities. I will try to keep this list as updated as possible.

University of Rochester's Rochester Scholars Program

This is a 1-2 week long summer course for both middle and high school students. Classes are hands on and  taught by experts in the field. Classes are available on a variety of topics including sciences, history, english, music, etc., along with courses in astronomy, physics and optics. Registration is due in early June.

PRe-college Experience in Physics for women (PREP)

The Pre-college Experince in Physics for Women (PREP) program is run by the University of Rochester. It's a month long day camp for high school girls interested in learning physics. Classes consist of lectures, projects, experiments and book work. But the best part is... no homework! Girls from any local high school are encouraged to apply, and no prior physics experince is needed!

University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics High School Summer Internship

This is a paid high school internship for high school Juniors at LLE. Students work one-on-one with their advisors on a physics related project that will further the development and progress of laser physics.

Rochester Museum and Science Center Summer Camps

The Rochester Museum and Science (RMSC) center offers February, April, and Jully/August camps for kids of all ages. Both full day camps and partial day camps are available in a variety of science related fields. Also, check the RMSC for other physics and astronomy related events such as "Science and Technology Days at the museum", Astronomy in the planetarium lobby, and telescope buying seminars. Star shows are offered at the Strasenburgh Planetarium every weekend as well.

On clear Saturday nights, members of ASRAS operate a telescope atop the planetarium at the RMSC. Stop by to observe the moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae and more! This event is free, and no registration is required.

Imaging Science High School Summer Internship Program at RIT

Paid internships for high school students in the areas of imaging science and astronomy. Students get to work with an expert or team of experts in the field on a summer long research project

Mees Observatory Tours

The Mees Observatory, located in Bristol Hills NY, is a beautiful astronomical observatory operated by the University of Rochester. Tours are held on weekends in the summer. Pre-registration is required.

RIT Observatory Open House

The RIT observatory, located on John St. right around the corner from the RIT campus, holds seasonal open houses. Check the above link for date and time information. Open houses are weather pending, and no registration is required.

Rochester Academy of Sciences Astronomy Chapter

The Astronomy Chapter of the Rochester Academy of Sciences (ASRAS) is a local group of astronomy enthusiasts. Memebership is open to all age and skill levels. No advanced knowledge of astronomy is required, only the desire to learn. The club has a 17 acre observatory located in Ionia, NY and holds monthly meetings at RIT.
