AB: Phase singularities are a
ubiquitous feature of waves of all forms and represent a fundamental aspect of
wave topology. An optical vortex phase singularity occurs when there is a
spiral phase ramp about a point phase singularity. We report an experimental
observation of an optical vortex in a field consisting of 9-keV x-ray photons.
The vortex is created with an x-ray optical structure that imparts a spiral
phase distribution to the incident wave field and is observed by use of
diffraction about a wire to create a division-of-wave-front interferometer.

AB: Double sign inversion of the topological
charge of an optical vortex was predicted and observed experimentally for a

lens is analyzed by the decomposition of the orbital angular momentum into the
"vortical" and "mechanical" components. Topological
reactions in the beam wave resulting in the sign inversion of the optical
vortex upon the intersection of the wavefront edge dislocation are considered.

soliton clusters-multisoliton bound states in a homogeneous bulk optical
medium-and reveal a key physical mechanism for their stabilization associated
with a staircaselike phase distribution that induces a net angular momentum and
leads to cluster rotation. The ringlike soliton clusters provide a nontrivial
generalization of the concepts of two-soliton spiraling, optical vortex
solitons, and necklace-type optical beams.

AB: It is shown that remarkable
spectral changes take place in the neighborhood of phase singularities near the
focus of a converging, spatially fully coherent polychromatic wave diffracted
at an aperture. In particular, when the spectrum of the wave in the aperture
consists of a single line with a narrow Gaussian profile, the spectrum near a
phase singularity (i.e., near points of zero intensity of some particular
spectral component) changes drastically along a closed loop around the
singularity. The spectrum is redshifted at some points, blueshifted at others,
and is split into two lines elsewhere.

AB: Second-harmonic generation was
studied theoretically for the vector singularities (daisy modes) of linearly
polarized light and for the elliptic singularities (C points) of elliptically
polarized light. Topological charge doubling for C points and daisy modes,
similar to that found for vortices, was found. Unlike for vortices, however, it
was found that for both C points and daisy modes the sign of the charge is
reversed; for C points the photon spin or handedness (right or left) is also
reversed; and for daisy modes the number of intensity petals is not doubled.
These findings are all unexpected because neither charge nor spin nor orbital
angular momentum is conserved for C points, whereas a daisy mode in which the
number of intensity petals does not equal twice the magnitude of the charge is
anomalous.

AB: In a recent Letter, Gbur,
Visser, and Wolf [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 013901 (2002)] predict that remarkable
spectral changes can take place in the neighborhood of phase singularities of a
diffracted focused wave. We report here the experimental observation of this
anomalous spectral behavior and show that this is a general characteristic of
optical vortices. Using a high-resolution interferometric technique, we are
able to measure directly both the spectral intensity distribution and the
spectral phase at the singular points of optical waves.

AB: Polarization singularities in
paraxial vector optical fields are analyzed in terms of the phase singularities
of complex Stokes scalar fields. Six independent relationships are obtained
that connect the topological charges of these singularities on special closed
contours with the charges of singularities that are enclosed by these contours.
These relationships, which have been confirmed by experimental data and
computer simulations, imply topological polarization correlations of an
infinite range.
