AB: Traditional interferometric
methods for measuring the vortex structure of complex wave fields suffer from
many intrinsic problems and seldom yield results of any accuracy. Using the
unique properties of what I call Poincare vortices, I develop a radically
different method based on Stokes parameters that offers many practical
advantages. The theory of this new method is discussed, and its unique
capabilities are illustrated by reconstruction with high accuracy of the vortex
structure of a simulated random field containing numerous vortices, including
several closely spaced vortex pairs that would be difficult, if not impossible,
to resolve by traditional means.

AB: We study linear and nonlinear
wave scattering by an optical vortex in a self-defocusing nonlinear Kerr
medium. In the linear case, we find a splitting of a plane-wave front at the
vortex proportional to its circulation, similar to what occurs in the scattered
wave of electrons for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. For larger wave amplitudes, we
study analytically and numerically the scattering of a dark-soliton stripe (a
nonlinear analog of a small-amplitude wave packet) by a vortex and observe a
significant asymmetry of the scattered wave. Subsequently, a wave-front
splitting of the scattered wave develops into transverse modulation
instability, "unzipping" the stripe into trains of vortices with
opposite charges.

AB: We report what is believed to
be the first detailed experimental observation of the dynamic inversion of the
topological charge of an optical vortex under free-space propagation. The
vortex self-transformation occurs through continuous deformation of the
noncanonical strength of the corresponding screw wave front dislocation, and is
mediated by the occurrence of an extremely sharp turn in a Berry vortex
trajectory which observed at a Freund critical foliation appears as an
edge-line dislocation orthogonal to the propagation direction, at a crucial
point of the light evolution.

in the glare of a bright coherent source. Applications such as the detection of
an astronomical object, forward-scattered radiation, and incoherent light are

AB: We describe a classical
nonlinear optical system that displays superfluidity and its breakdown. The
system consists of a self-defocusing refractive medium inside a Fabry-Perot
cavity with a cylindrical obstacle. We have numerically solved for the
transmitted beam when an incident plane wave strikes the cavity at an oblique
angle. The presence of the incident beam pins the steady-state phase of the
output, preventing the formation of vortices or time-dependent flow. When the
incident beam is switched off, a transient wake of moving optical vortices is
produced. This is analogous to the breakdown of superfluidity above a critical
velocity.

AB: We predict new features for
the evolution of noncanonical screw wave-front dislocations nested in
diffracting light beams. The evolution equations for the location of
single-charge dislocations are derived, and their consequences are elaborated
by use of illustrative examples. It is shown that the dynamic trajectories of
the vortices can be controlled by adjustment of the noncanonical strength of
the input dislocations.
