The focus of the work in the Microdensitometry Laboratory is on
understanding the mechanisms involved in the interaction between ink,
paper, and light. These studies involve the measurement of the
distribution of light reflected from images produced by a variety of
processes ranging from traditional lithographic printing to digital
printers such as ink jet, laser, and thermal transfer. By examining
carefully printed "test targets", information about the scatter of light
within the paper, the spreading of inks on the paper, the penetration of
inks into the paper, and the variability of the printing process can be
measured and understood quantitatively.
