Studying at the Munsell Color Science Laboratory was one of the most challenging yet rewarding opportunities of my academic career.  As an undergraduate, I studied  Film and Video at Columbia College Chicago.  I had always been very interested in  the physics of light and color, image formation, and image perception; this led me to RIT's Center for Imaging Science, specifically MCSL.  I thoroughly enjoyed the coursework and the research which I conducted.  Through this research, which involved color matching for fine art restoration purposes, I discovered my affinity for cultural heritage preservation.  I learned so much about how color and imaging science can be applied to preservation of many different art forms.  Now that I have completed my MS degree, I plan to pursue a career in media preservation, specifically photography and moving image, that will allow me to apply knowledge that I have developed at MCSL.

I joined RIT to pursue my Masters in Industrial Engineering and got the opportunity to work with the Munsell Color Science Lab because of a collaboration project between the two departments in Spring 2009. I was working with Dr. Jim Ferwerda and the 3-D Imaging Group. To be honest, I was a little skeptical initially about having to do an entire thesis without having an undergrad background in the field. But the support and encouragement I got from my labmates and professors helped make the transition very easy and enjoyable. My research was primarily related to explaining the “touch-up problem” in painted drywall surfaces. In a broad sense, we were trying to understand how the interactions between microscale and mesoscale properties contribute to overall surface appearance. MCSL is filled with some very brilliant, hard-working and passionate scientists who love what they do, and this enthusiasm is almost infectious! In addition, the state-of-the-art facilities provide the necessary infrastructure one may need to make a meaningful contribution to their chosen field of research. I think I count my experience with MCSL as one of the highlights of my graduate study and I am grateful to the 3DIG group and Dr. Ferwerda for the immense support they have given me.

My enthusiasm for Color Science began in 2000 when I started my education for the master's degree in the area of image processing in China. From that time, I became acquainted with Munsell Color Science Laboratory at RIT.  I was deeply attracted by the distinguished faculty with their creative research in the Color Science field. I am so honored to have the opportunity to study in MCSL. The excellent professors and nice staff always gave students constructive advice, invaluable support and encouragement to their studies, research and projects. Being a member in this big family is an unforgettable memory in my life. I enjoy applying my color and imaging science knowledge in the industry world. I am interested in image quality, image processing, digital intermediate, color management and color appearance models.

I quite enjoyed and appreciated the unforgettable life in MCSL from fall 2007 to 2009. Prior to that, I got my BS in EE from North China Electric Power University in Beijing China. I treasured every moment being a student here in Munsell lab, a place where excellent faculty, staff and well-equipped laboratories provide a stimulating academic and also a family-like environment, a place where I had so close friendship and made many lifelong friends, a place where we had such an interesting and colorful life by doing a lot of activities such as swimming, roller skating, traveling, ice cream festivals and so on after study. Most importantly, Munsell has excellent professors and projects that I can work for to improve my skills in color and imaging science. The study here provided an excellent unique background for me which made me be able to find a great job. Currently I’m a color scientist in HP working on the scanner and printing development. It’s such a great feeling to apply what I’ve learned from school in my work and to have so many expert colleagues, especially when some of whom happened to be alumni in Munsell as well :)

While an undergraduate, in the Imaging and Photographic Technology program here at RIT, I was exposed to color science and the Munsell Color Science Lab. After a summer internship with at IBM with two color science graduates I became interested in pursuing a masters in imaging science with a concentration in color science. I spent the summer of 2007 working a number of projects with Mitchell Rosen in order to get my feet wet in several areas of research that relate imaging science and color. I am looking forward to the experiences that I will have during my graduate studies.

Being accepted to MCSL at RIT is one of the most fortunate things I had for the last couple of years, and maybe for my whole life time. When I was pursuing my master degree in Optical Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology back in China, MCSL is just a symbol representing the world’s topnotch knowledge of color science; when I get here and start my study at RIT, MCSL to me is like the door to a whole new colorful world. The faculties treat students as family members and those state-of-art facilities always spark our creativity and boost the efficiency.  Working and growing together with passionate lab mates
are always joyful and unforgettable experiences. Upon graduation, I was exposed to various industry opportunities to practice color science knowledge. Currently, I am working for Apple Inc on camera image quality evaluation. I believe the education that I received from MCSL will keep benefiting me for the rest of my life.

Prior to coming to RIT, I obtained my B.A. Degree in Mathematics from Ithaca College. There, I also minored in Biology, and so when I found the Color Science program online I was excited to see the similarities pertaining to my interests and background. Currently I am in my first year, taking the fundamental color courses which will then be applied to my research. The MCSL has already proven its impressive reputation, thus, I look forward to expanding my color science knowledge here so I can later apply it in the work field.

I got my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an Indian university in 2000. Illumination Engineering was my focus area. I completed my first MS degree at Pennsylvania State University in Architectural Engineering, with specialization in building electrical/lighting in 2005. I was looking for an opportunity to do more interdisciplinary and development oriented work, which seemed difficult in lighting. Right at that time, I came across MCSL website and became interested in the field of color science. It was in line with my research at Penn State as well. I joined the MS Color Science program in 2005. My current research is in the area of video processing and Dr. Mark Fairchild is my advisor. If you are interested, please visit www.abhijitsarkar.com to get more information on my past and present research projects.

I came to Munsell Color Science Laboratory in fall 2006. Before that, I was an engineer of SONY Corp. in Japan for one year. I earned both my B.S. and M.S. in optical engineering from Zhejiang University, a very beautiful university in China. I am very proud of being one part of the lab. Actually, I enjoy with all the things here: outstanding professors, nice staffs, interesting research projects, state of art facilities, excellent study environment, and, the most important, family-like atmosphere. I would like to combine my optical engineering background and color science knowledge learned (or to be learned) here to create some wonderful things. I am sure that, my dream would be realized in the near future.

I graduated from RIT with an M.S. in Color Science in the Fall of 2006.  I returned to Hewlett Packard in Corvallis, Oregon where I spent the next year doing color modeling and design on various concepts for color electronic paper.  In 2007 I transitioned to an HP ‘start-up’ organization that has grown into HP’s market-leading inkjet printing press organization, developing digital printing presses that print on 40” wide rolls of paper at 600 feet per minute.  Within this organization, I’ve led the development of the color management system.

I’ve used knowledge from every single course - color modeling, color management, color measurement, vision & psychometrics and even continue to analyze and develop algorithms using Matlab.  The fundamental skills and knowledge I developed while at RIT enabled me to contribute at HP in a unique and significant way, resulting in a promotion to Senior Engineer in 2007.  It’s also interesting how the mention of RIT seems to gain a little ‘instant respect’ from those in the color & imaging community.  However, I think what I remember most about my time at RIT was the feeling of being more than just a student going through the program – I remember ‘waffle day’ and MacGregor’s fondly.

I graduated from the Munsell lab in 2005 and then went to work for Philips Electronics in the Netherlands performing research on how people perceive color on wide gamut televisions. The breadth and depth of the courses in addition to the research performed for my thesis was very good preparation for the research I did there. I moved on from Philips to Gunlocke doing something much different within color science where my education and experience is used directly to assist in the manufacture of high end wooden office furniture. At Gunlocke I manage the color lab where, among other things, we develop tools for production and create new colors to meet customer requests. I work with a variety of teams to assist production issues related to finishing and color. Specifically, the majority of my time is spent working on improvements in color consistency of products and color measurement. Furthermore, I work on a variety of specialized (R&D) projects where, among other things, we seek to further enhance the color capability of the manufacturing process. In this role, I also utilize the experience gained in the Munsell Lab both in coursework and in daily interactions with different team members - their expertise continues to guide me and I feel fortunate to have gained a knowledgeable trade that is deemed so valuable in the marketplace.

MS Color
I'm Yoshio Okumura, 2005 MS Color graduate. After working as an color-solution engineer in a printing company and taking a break, I joined the MCSL family. My previous academic background is electronic engineering in Japan. This college period was the beginning of focusing on how to make and measure specimens neatly, that pretty much works for the master thesis now. Color science attracts me in terms of exploring our visual phenomenon. The most exciting experience in the lab is getting to think of how to get useful information through honorable faculties, genius students, and variety of science magazines. I hope I will work as a color scientist somewhere as well as teach part of color science to general people of different backgrounds.
