After being extremely active as an Optical Interference Coating Design Engineer for over 20 years I decided to return to graduate school to pursue my PhD.  I have both my BS and my MS in Optics from the University of Rochester.  I am thrilled to be part of MCSL since many of my past design activities in optical interference coatings over the decades have crossed paths with Color Science. I hope to leverage my skill set in coatings to bring about new research areas for MCSL.  Research work that will grow and allow me to seamlessly become a full-time university professor after my graduate work is complete.  I am a member of SPIE and a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) where I have also been a member of the OSA Board of Directors (’05-’06) and President of the OSA – Rochester Local Section, Inc. (’09).  I hold 2 patents and 2 patents pending, published 15 journal articles/refereed conference presentations in the areas of coatings and color, and am an Adjunct Assistant Professor for the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics and the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Science.

I received my Bachelors of Engineering in Architecture and my Masters of Engineering in Architectural Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. Lighting engineering was my research field. During the master's program, I joined an internship at Panasonic, where I developed LED backlighting for display. This is when I realized that lighting research has different applications, and I got interested in color science. Since then, I have wanted to learn more diverse applications of color science, so I came to MCSL. Almost everything I am learning here is new, but I am fully enjoying this environment!

Before joining MCSL, I received my masters in Geosciences from the University of Arizona. There I focused on light interactions with terrestrial minerals, mainly the Raman spectroscopy of garnet group minerals. I did my bachelors in Geological Science at Indiana University where I also pursued a BA in music. During my study of minerals I have always been fascinated by the wide variations in color which are often due to very minor variations in chemical composition. After my study from a mostly geological and chemical perspective, I came to the conclusion that much is still unknown about color in minerals. I decided to approach this problem from a new angle and thus chose to pursue color in minerals from the color scientists perspective. Most recently I have worked with the Girl Scouts doing science education and I am very passionate about getting girls excited about science. I am excited to pursue my Ph.D. in color science and learn more about light and matter interactions and how they are perceived by the human eye.

I am very happy to start the Ph.D. in Color Science at MCSL. Prior to coming to RIT, I received my B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Girona, Spain and my M.S. in Computer Graphics between the University of Girona and the Polytechnical University of Catalunya, Spain. I have been doing research in the Geometry and Graphics Group at the University of Girona under the supervision of Prof. Xavier Pueyo and Dr. Carles Bosch. Prof. Sumanta Pattanaik also supervised my Master's Thesis, and later on I had the opportunity to study with him at the University of Central Florida in 2009. Until now, my research has been focused in material appearance. We will see in which new adventures I get involved at MCSL!

I received my BS in textile engineering from Isfahan University of Technology in 2002. There was the first place I got involved and interested in color science. Accordingly, I decided to continue my study in textile engineering and in the specific field of color science and color technology. I received my MS from the same university with the supervision of Prof. Amirshahi and in the field of color management. After my graduation in 2005, I was hired as a research faculty in Institute of colorants, paint and coatings for about four years. I started working on different aspects of color and mainly multispectral measurement and color reproduction. Participating in AIC conference in China and meeting Roy and Rod encouraged me to follow up my PhD program more seriously. Certainly, attending the MCSL PhD program is a valuable opportunity for me to fulfill my study in the field of color science. Multispectral measurement and color reproduction were my previous fields of study; however, there are vast varieties of topics I can choose to work on in the future.

I received my BS in Imaging and Photographic Technology at RIT with minors in Math, Stats and Psychology. I was given an opportunity after my sophomore year to do an internship with Fogra, in Munich, where I was first exposed to the world of printing, color management and color science. I was hooked from that point onward. I spent the next two years taking courses in perceptual psychology and statistics, and working as a student researcher for the School of Print Media. I was fortunate to be accepted into the Master's program at Munsell an began studying here in the Fall of 2009. Munsell has so much to offer and every day is filled new opportunities and experiences. The courses are challenging, yet intellectually rewarding and I am very happy to be studying here.

Before I joined the color science family, I earned my B.S. Degree in Optical Engineering from Wuhan University, China in 2009. There, I studied many interdisciplinary courses covering math, physics, and optics, and did some research about spectral imaging. My interest in color science started in my third year in Wuhan University when a visiting scientist from MCSL brought a colorful world to me. Since then, my interest in color science has been getting stronger. During the last year in Wuhan University, I did a project in NCS (Beijing) and completed my thesis concentrating on image color appearance models. These experiences encouraged me to pursuit a graduate program in color science. Fortunately, I have joined this family and am enjoying my everyday here. Currently I have been taking the fundamental color science courses. I am determined that I will broaden what I have learned here to create a more colorful world in future.

I am so happy to here be at the MCSL pursuing a PhD in Color Science. I received my B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Utah in 1991. A year before graduating (1990) I started working for a startup company called Onyx Graphics where I was involved in using color CAD electrostatic plotters for the purpose of short run large format color image reproduction. Over the years this has migrated to using inkjet technologies. I have been intimately involved in most of the processes associated with this field. In 2005 I received my M.S in Imaging Science emphasizing in color through the distance learning program here at RIT. While at RIT I developed an ICC color management library for the Color Systems class which has evolved into the open source SampleIcc project which I continue to develop and manage. Currently, I am a very busy person. Besides being a PhD student, I am the father of six wonderful kids, and I am gainfully employed as a Senior Software Architect for Onyx Graphics. They are graciously supporting me (to some extent) in this venture. I represent Onyx Graphics as a steering committee member of the International Color Consortium, and I am currently the Chair of the ICC Architecture Working Group. I look forward to the many things I can learn and possibly share while associating with some of the top present and future color scientists in the world.

I received my B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science from Caltech, taking a diverse range of courses covering physics, optics, and computer vision. Since then, I've been applying what I learned about vision and image processing to my work in motion picture post-production. Most recently, I had the opportunity to implement a front-to-end color management pipeline for a major Hollywood studio. This experience was very positive and encouraged me to seek a graduate program in color science. Ultimately, this led to the doorsteps of MCSL and now that I am here I find myself learning marvellous new things about color on a daily basis. Following the completion of my studies, I hope to return to the motion picture industry and apply my new knowledge toward the advancement of digital color grading systems.

I am very excited to be starting the new color science PhD--something I've been eagerly anticipating after hearing about the plans for the degree a few years ago. In 1999, I completed my MS in color science here at RIT. I had a great time working on my Master's at MCSL with Mark Fairchild as my advisor and look forward to the adventures of a PhD. Prior to RIT, I studied chemistry and music at Wheaton College (located in the suburbs of Chicago). I have been employed as a scientist by Eastman Kodak Company since 1992 and the company is sponsoring me in my full time PhD studies (Thanks, Kodak!). Look for additional exciting information about me at www.culturalcolor.com.
