1. An image of a sailboat that has been corrupted by noise is named SBNOISE.GIF and is located in the file ~herrc/simg782/images. Write an IDL program that will restore the image by using the MEDIAN function. Compare the restored image to a copy of the uncorrupted original, which is in the file sailboat.gif. Explore the use of different size median filters (3x3, 5x5, 7x7) and report which works best for this image restoration problem.

1. Write an IDL program that will process the noisy sailboat image with an averaging filter. Compare the result with the original image in the file. Explain the tradeoffs that have to be made in the choice of the filter.
2. Compare the use of the median filter and the averaging filter for restoration of this image.
