Research Highlights
1) Image Microstructure and the Quality of Printed Images - Optical
microscopy, coupled with image analysis, provides information about the
microstructure of images. Of particular interest is the microstructure of
halftone images of ink on paper produced by a variety of printing processes.
The focus of the work is to understand the relationships between tone and color
reproduction and the optical properties of inks and papers. The results of the
study are leading to a new model of ink/paper images which may provide a
unified description of both halftone and continuous tone images. 2) Diagnostic Imaging for Museum Applications - Works of art in museums suffer from a variety of ills ranging from slow chemical degradation to sudden physical damage. Museum professionals trained in the treatment of aged and damaged art works are in need of diagnostic imaging techniques to help them assess the nature of the problems they are called upon to treat. Research is underway to provide improved diagnostic imaging techniques based on electronic image capture and digital image analysis. Particular focus is on the diagnosis of degradation in daguerreotype photographic plates and works of art on paper.
