DATA SET 1: Cattaneo, Pelz, Postma, Rosen, & Vecchi

EXPERIMENT DESCRIPTION
As part of an experiment probing the picture superiority effect Zaira Cattaneo (University of Pavia, Italy), observers’ gaze was tracked during study and recall of multiple targets on a photograph presented on a large-format display (Cattaneo, Z., Rosen. M., Vecchi, T., & Pelz. J.B., [in press], Monitoring eye movements to investigate the picture superiority effect in spatial memory, Perception). Observers viewed a photograph containing eight objects for 30 seconds. Their task during the ‘study phase’ presented here was to remember the location of the objects in the photograph. Eye movements were monitored with an Applied Science Laboratories model 501 headband-mounted eyetracker. Head movements were monitored with a Polhemus Fastrak magnetic tracker. The eye and head position were integrated to compute the gaze position on the display. The output of the eyetracker includes video field number (1/60 sec), relative pupil diameter, horizontal and vertical gaze position on the display.

Images were displayed on a Pioneer 50" plasma display (503CMX) with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. Observers were seated 110cm from the 110 cm X 62 cm display The images were 1053 x 556 pixels, subtending approximately 45 x 23 degrees.

SCANPATH (EYE-TRACKER) DATA

The data files

E3S6C1-calib.txt
E3S6C1-practice.txt
E3S6C1-trial1.txt

have the following data fields:

field pupDiam H_gaze V_gaze H_pixel V_pixel

Where:

field = video field reported by ASL 501 (1 field = 1/60 sec)

pupDiam = pupil diameter reported by ASL 501 – arbitrary units

H_gaze = integrated (eye&head) gaze horizontal intersection on display as reported by ASL in inches (0,0 is nominally the center of the screen)

V_gaze = as H_gaze, vertical intercept

H_pixel = horizontal location on image display in pixel units (0,0 is upper left corner of display)

V_pixel = vertical location on image display in pixel units (0,0 is upper left corner of display)

(H_pixel and V_pixel were calculated based on a linear fit to calibration data)
