The “Pavia 2012 International School on Data Fusion and Target Detection from Airborne and Spaceborne Data" is the second in a series of International Summer Schools held in Pavia in early September, following the first edition in 2011 on “Data Fusion and High Performance Computing”, which was very successful and appreciated. The new edition aims at providing to the interested attendees the basic knowledge on:
· problems related to target detection in various types of airborne and spaceborne remotely sensed data, including relevant and efficient data fusion approaches;
· available approaches to build efficient solutions for such problems in an operational and applicative environment;
· high-performance computing as a tool to tackle the sometimes high computational resource demands of target detection algorithms.
Target detection and data fusion issues are typical in modern aircrafts, whose sensors are capable of providing large amounts of data of different kinds, which need to be suitably dealt with in view of turning them in real time into useful information to the pilot or to the ground control stations. This requires on the one side to develop effective data fusion strategies and on the other to implement them at a sufficient speed to timely deliver results. Intended audience includes not only PhD and Post Doc students but also interested staff from research institutions and companies who would like to earn a deeper knowledge on the matter and get an update on the latest trends in research from scientists operating in the field.
The course will start from basic elements on target detection, then it will expand to various types of remotely sensed data, including data fusion. In addition, parallel and distributed computing will be treated as a means to face high computational demand. The teaching body will include world-class academic and industrial experts as:
· Dr.Eckart Michaelsen, Fraunhofer IOSB, current Chair of TC7 "Remote Sensing" of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR)
· Dr. Antonio Plaza, Associate Professor at the University of Extremadura, Spain (IEEE GRSS Director of Education and Associate Editor, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing)
· Dr. John Kerekes, Associate Professorat Rochester Institute of technology, USA (VP for Technical Activities, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society and Associate Editor, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing)
· Prof. Pierfrancesco Lombardo, Professor at University of Rome "La Sapienza",(Technical Co-Chair of the 2008 IEEE Radar Conference and Associate Editor for Radar Systems, IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems)
· Dr. Jörgen Ahlberg, Development Manager, Image Processing, Termisk Systemteknik AB + Visiting Senior Lecturer, Information Coding at University of Linköping + Owner & co-founder, Visage Technologies AB
A session devoted to attendees’ presentations of their activities and results will be organized. This is especially conceived for young researchers but is also open to other contributors. The former edition of the School has led to discovering a very useful networking function for such a session, which is then being planned again for this year. Channels to publication of contributions will be explored.
Finally, visits to industry/research centres premises are also being planned as for the former edition, but still to be defined.
Interested candidates are encouraged to send their application to pavia2012rsschool@gmail.com and cc: to Fabio Dell'Acqua (fabio.dellacqua-at-unipv.it) including a short note on their motivations, and a CV, no later than 20th June, 2012. Candidates will be screened based on the information provided, and accepted attendees will be notified within 5th July, 2012. Prospective participants are advised that:
- the purpose of the selection is mainly to limit the number of attendees in case of excess applications, in the interest of the students themselves;
- the advance CVs are intended mainly for allowing lecturers to tune their talks for level and contents
A registration fee of 100€ will be charged to confirmed participants. Accommodation at special prices are available for a limited (but not so severely limited…) number of attendees.
