This summer, 14 of the area's brightest high school juniors will get the chance to work in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs through the Rochester Institute of Technology — and get paid for it.

Over 50 students usually apply each year for the competitive paid internship program at the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science that places students in teams of RIT graduate and undergraduate students working in research labs focusing on space weather, ultrasound imaging, remote sensing and astronomical imaging. Only 14 are accepted.

The program —now in its 14th year— gives qualified high school juniors the opportunity to work directly with university scientists on imaging-related research projects in a variety of fields. The students will gain hands-on experience in a real, working laboratory setting as contributing members of their various research teams.

The seven-week program begins on July 8 and lasts through August. Students work 40 hours per week and are paid full-time.

Many of the students accepted into the program choose to apply to RIT.

Applications are due to RIT by no later than March 1. Information on the program and the research programs the students can work on is available, along with an application packet, at the program website.
