Third year imaging science student Mike Zelinski was recently chosen for a summer co-op in Denmark at the Risoe National Laboratory. Risoe was founded by Nobel prize winning physicist Niels Bohr in the 1940's. It carries out research in science and technology, providing Danish society new opportunities for technological development. Mike (who speaks fluent Danish) will be working in the Optics and Plasma Research Department where he will be extracting optical properties of cancer lesions in certain types of body tissue (skin and brain) using a technique called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). "Normally work like this is reserved for advanced graduate students," Zelinski said. "But that's the great thing about imaging science. This curriculum even puts undergraduates right on the cutting edge and prepares them to take advantage of these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities when they present themselves."
