Stephanie Shubert, a senior in the Center for Imaging Science, was recently selected as RIT's College of Science Student Delegate. This is the highest honor awarded to graduating students at RIT - each of the Institute's eight colleges selects a single delegate each year. The primary responsibility of the delegate is to speak on behalf of the other graduating seniors at the annual commencement ceremony.
Stephanie, who is a deaf student, was selected for outstanding effort both in and out of the classroom. Dr. Jeff Pelz, a faculty member in the Center for Imaging Science, recently noted "It's interesting that when professors were asked to comment on Stephanie, her superb academic performance was almost an afterthought. In imaging science, mathematics, and liberal arts they all focused on her motivation, intellectual curiosity, and leadership."
Stephanie's leadership extends well beyond RIT. This year she's tutoring students in mathematics and science, and is very active with a club on campus called InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. She's a leader of a small group within this club which is involved with Bible study and interaction outside the classroom. She was also involved in an aid project in South America over spring break. This aid project consisted of a team of 14 RIT students who went to Guyana to construct an orphanage in the village of Bartica, as well as two churches in the remote rural areas of the country. As part of this team, Stephanie led a group of deaf students who taught sign language and communication skills to hearing and deaf Guyanese people. "Guyana is a third-world country and there are many stereotypes of deaf there," Stephanie said. "Deaf people in Guyana do not have the same kind of education or career opportunities which deaf Americans have. Some people do not understand how deaf people have abilities and feelings like other human beings. It was an incredible experience for me to be able to share my life experience with the people there and break their stereotypes."
After completing her Bachelor's Degree Stephanie plans to pursue her Master's in Imaging Science, with a concentration in the area of medical imaging. If you'd like to contact Stephanie, her e-mail address is sls6626@rit.edu.
