Position Descriptions and Career Tracks for CIS Research Scientists, Engineers, and Software Engineers Within CIS we have created as set of career tracks for Research Scientists Research Engineers Research Software Engineers with consistent position descriptions and pay scales.
These follow a generic pattern across Science, Engineering, and software Engineering, with small differences.
For each area, there are (at least) seven levels, from I through VII that map onto the RIT career/job bands as: I = Band 00 (i.e., discretionary salaries not limited by banding) II = Band 00 III= Band 48 IV = Band 44 V = Band 40 VI = Band 38 VII = Band 36
View the RIT Market Bands
SCIENTIST TRACK: I Consulting Scientist = Distinguished Researcher II Principal Scientist III Senior Scientist IV Associate Scientist V Assistant Scientist VI Senior Research Assistant VII Research Assistant
ENGINEER TRACK: I Consulting Engineer = Distinguished Researcher II Principal Engineer III Senior Engineer IV Engineer 3 V Engineer 2 VI Engineer 1 VII Engineering Assistant
SOFTWARE ENGINEER TRACK: I Consulting Computer Scientist = Distinguished Researcher II Principal Computer Scientist III Senior System Software Engineer IV System Software Engineer V Senior Software Engineer VI Software Engineer VII Assistant Software Engineer
Off these tracks are Research Faculty (i.e., they are not “endpoints” of these tracks but separate possibilities) and postdoctoral researcher positions (postdocs are 1-3 year terminal positions).
